Mr. Viet Mai
Viet Mai was born in San Diego, grew up in Serra Mesa, went to Kearny High School and later completed his BA in Math-Computer Science at the University of California, San Diego. He has experienced firsthand what it means to live in America’s Finest City and learned early on to celebrate the diversity it has to offer.
While a student at UCSD, Viet started working as a tutor and mentor for the Early Academic Outreach Program, where he found his passion working with young people to help them realize their potential. He even found his own voice through spoken word poetry, and has since been presenting his craft to vast audiences of students, educators, and communities at large. Through poetry and education, Mr. Viet has connected with community leaders throughout San Diego and other cities to inspire young people, promote civic engagement, celebrate art and culture, and elevate social consciousness. Highlights include:
- 2017 National Poetry Slam Championship, San Diego PoetrySLAM Team
- 2016 Award of Merit, California Association of Teachers of English
- 2015 Special Commendation, The City of San Diego Race and Human Relations Commission
- 2014 Facilitator of the Year, Aaron Price Fellows Program
Mr. Viet currently serves as a Program Facilitator with the Village of Promise Collective Mentoring Program, and as an Independent Consultant, specializing in Education, Data Analysis, and Community Development. In addition, he devoutly continues to edutain his audience as a Public Speaker, Host, and Spoken Word Artist.
